If you’re looking to get a leg up on your way to CPA and itching to make your mark on the wide world of accounting in the process, then a scholarship from the AICPA might be just the thing you need. Snag one of these bad boys and you’ll become a member of the AICPA Legacy Scholars program in addition to getting funds for your education.
As the authority on all things accounting, the AICPA designed the Legacy Scholars program to help scholarship recipients develop the beyond-the-classroom skills it takes to not only break into the biz, but also maintain a successful career. Things like leadership, communication and networking skills.
To do that, AICPA Legacy Scholars engage in at least eight hours of community service per semester. The possibilities are nearly endless. You could create a new accounting-related group on campus or teach seniors how to avoid financial scams. Perhaps assist a professor with accounting research, help veterans prepare their taxes, or even present to high school students on the awesomeness of being a CPA.
After the service is complete, you’ll share your experience (and the knowledge you gained) by writing a blog post on ThisWayToCPA.com to help other aspiring CPAs. You’ll also get access to some solid tips and techniques for selling yourself—and your AICPA Legacy Scholar experience—to potential employers. So what are you waiting for?
If you’re a full-time student pursuing an education in accounting, business or another related major (with plans to get your CPA) and have a GPA of at least 3.0, chances are we’ve got a scholarship that’s right for you.
For the 2013-14 scholarships, the AICPA awarded nearly $330,000 to more than 100 students through scholarships ranging from $1,000-$5,000. These hefty chunks of change came from the AICPA Foundation and contributions from Accountemps, New Jersey Society of CPAs and the Accounting Education Foundation of the Texas Society of CPAs.
So dig in and find the AICPA Legacy Scholarship that’s right for you. Heck, you might even be eligible to apply for more than one. And if you don’t find one that suits you (or if you’re just hungering for even more dough), cast your scholarship-seeking nets even wider and check out our National Scholarship Search.
